On Characterizing Flow Resistance in a Tidal Reach

چکیده

Abstract The tidal reaches are characterized by unsteady and non-uniform flow (UNF), which is significantly different from the commonly assumed steady uniform (SUF) in hydraulics. SUF shows invariant temporal spatial characteristics, thus acceleration absent a prismatic channel. However, for UNF, variation of velocity depth both scales causes loss energy, increases resistance. In order to clarify resistance its influencing factors reaches, this study investigates characteristics under UNF conditions. study, typical section Lower Yangtze River (LYR) – Kouanzhi Waterway (KW) was selected as area, where water surface along river course at tide levels, bathymetry multiple cross-sections, distribution cross-sectional were measured detail. Based on these field measurement data, contribution terms energy slope calculated evaluated, decomposing momentum equation. contributing include gradient, local acceleration, convective acceleration. results showed that have substantial impact during specific time periods, found be more significant than findings previous studies. show term except when close zero, throughout flood initial ebb periods. above research great significance investigation mechanisms numerical simulations rivers.

Basic flow field in a tidal basin

[1] A simplified model for tidal flow in a basin is presented. The model is based on the assumption of a flat water surface oscillating synchronously in the tidal basin. Under this hypothesis the depth-averaged continuity equation becomes a Poisson equation that can be easily resolved at each instant of the tidal cycle. This formulation, which is particularly valid for small, deep basins, provi...

Tidal flow field in a small basin

[1] The tidal flow field in a basin of small dimensions with respect to the tidal wavelength is calculated. Under these conditions, the tide becomes a standing wave oscillating synchronously (with a flat water surface) over the whole basin. The shallow water equations can thus be strongly simplified, expressing the discharge vector field in terms of a potential function and a stream function. T...

Resistance to Flow in a V-Shaped Bottom Channel

Water flow in open channels is always subject to the resistance to flow and energy dissipation. For design purposes, one of the needed variables is the hydraulic resistance coefficient. For this mean, the influence of cross-sectional shape together with secondary flow cells and lateral distribution of true boundary shear stress have not yet been fully explored. This paper surveys the number of ...

Modelling a Tidal Turbine in Unsteady Flow

A brief review of the literature is provided on the characteristics of marine currents and the approaches used for simulating tidal turbines. The feasibility of using CFD models to simulate time-dependent turbulent flow around a tidal turbine is then explored. Two different approaches for specifying the structure of the turbulent inflow conditions in CFD models are compared: the von Kármán spec...
